The Leadville Irish: Naming the Unnamed in a 19th Century Pauper Cemetery and Unearthing the Story of the Largest Irish Community in the American West
This presentation will cover the history of Irish immigrants in Colorado, focusing specifically on Leadville and a major memorial now under construction in the Catholic Pauper section of Evergreen Cemetery, where mostly Irish immigrants are buried in sunken, unmarked graves. The average age at the time of death is 23 and nearly half of those buried there are children.
